It would be really useful to be able to use the @self macro in the parent field of the checklist. It is the only way to use it in templates. Do you have any estimates?

Use of the @self macro in the parent field
Don't understand the issue, if you don't set a parent as parameter then it defaults to the page owning the checklist.
So this would do it:
{checklist:label=todo} ... {checklist}
