As part of an early access program (EAP), you can now build standard and advanced editions of Marketplace apps in the cloud that are Paid via Atlassian. During this stage of the EAP, participants can build and test editions of non-production apps in development, staging, and production environments.
EAP features are available to select users for demand, viability, and suitability testing. Releasing a feature as an EAP helps us gather insights that inform future development decisions.
App editions present an opportunity to tailor and monetize features for high-demand customers seeking added value while also offering affordable options for those sensitive to pricing. By creating editions for your apps, you can display multiple packaging options for a cloud app within a single Marketplace listing. This pricing and packaging flexibility enables you to adapt pricing based on customer preferences, leveraging your cloud investments and enhancing control over pricing and growth strategies.
Customers across all segments can purchase app editions regardless of their parent product edition. This means a Jira Cloud customer on a Free edition can install an advanced app edition, or a Jira Cloud customer on the Enterprise plan can install a standard app edition.
Editions exclusively apply to cloud apps, accessible for both Forge and Connect, and limited to Paid via Atlassian (PvA) apps. Initially, two types of editions, standard and advanced, will be available. In the future, the free type of edition will also be incorporated.
While you can discuss app features and gather feedback, please refrain from announcing Marketplace-wide app editions. A coordinated customer announcement is planned to align with the release.

App editions provide additional flexibility to help you build a more detailed monetization, packaging, and growth strategy.
With app editions, you can attract a wider range of customers by offering options that cater to their budgets and desired features. Standard editions are for budget-conscious customers while advanced editions are for those willing to pay for richer features and services. While not yet available, free editions are for those who want to try before they buy and have a less flexible budget.
The Marketplace platform supports easy upselling. By leveraging a dedicated UI that displays all app editions under a single listing, you can clearly communicate your full range of offerings, making it simpler to showcase the value of upgrading to more feature-rich app editions.
App editions enable you to differentiate pricing effectively, covering the costs of maintaining expensive features in the advanced editions. This ensures that while you maintain a strong base of customers, you can also fully monetize customers who are willing to pay more, thereby sustaining investments in advanced capabilities.
Below are some ideas on how you can think about differentiating editions for your app.
App edition | Standard | Advanced |
---|---|---|
Features
Specific functionalities or characteristics of your app that enable users to perform tasks or achieve certain outcomes. These are embedded directly in the code and you can differentiate between your editions on the basis of different features. | Standard features for customers needing fundamental app functionality to appeal to a vast majority that is willing to pay. | Features included in the standard edition, plus premium and enterprise-grade features to meet specific customer needs and attract them to upgrade to a higher price point. For example, advanced automation or smart search. |
Services
Various offerings that provide additional value, support, and functionality to users beyond the core features of your app. These are embedded directly in the code but are essential for enhancing the user experience. You can differentiate between your editions based on a higher level of service. | Standard services, like 24x5 support or limited storage. | Advanced services, like 24x7 support, a dedicated customer success manager, or unlimited storage. |
Pricing
Think about differentiating your pricing according to features and services. When evaluating features, consider adding enterprise capabilities to the advanced edition of your app if they are not already included in the standard edition. This strategy gives you a competitive advantage by allowing the development of additional features that may be too costly to maintain in the standard edition. | The pricing of your standard edition could stem from the majority of customers' willingness to pay. | The pricing of your advanced edition could cater to a more specific group with niche needs. It could be priced for enterprise customers with features and services specifically catering to advanced needs, such as enhanced access control or scalability. |
