Define your product

Lay the groundwork for a successful Marketplace app by validating the problem you're solving, the audience you're serving, and the Atlassian products you'll target.

OUTCOME: By the end of this phase, you should have:

  • A clearly articulated problem statement and value proposition for your target users.
  • One or more target Atlassian products (and collections) where your app will live.
  • A foundational understanding of Forge as your development platform (including quotas, limits, and pricing).
  • A documented product hypothesis you can validate before you invest heavily in building.

Think of this as reducing risk: you're validating there's a real problem, a real audience, and a viable way to deliver value on Atlassian Cloud.

1. Define the business problem and target users

What to do Why this matters

A precise problem statement keeps your scope focused and guides every decision, from product surface to pricing. The most successful apps solve a specific problem exceptionally well.

Resources

2. Choose target Atlassian products

What to do
  • Decide target Atlassian products (e.g., Jira Cloud, Confluence Cloud, JSM, Rovo, others as needed) and how your app fits into Atlassian collections.
  • Understand product-specific extension points and capabilities
  • Review product compatibility requirements
Why this matters

Different Atlassian products have different extension points, audiences, and ecosystem dynamics. Choosing deliberately up front saves rework later.

Resources

3. Learn about Forge as your development platform

What to do
  • Review Forge platform capabilities and limitations
  • Understand Forge platform quotas, limits, and pricing
  • Decide if you will build/deploy on standard cloud and/or AGC and/or Isolated Cloud
Why this matters

Forge is Atlassian's recommended platform for new Marketplace cloud apps. Understanding its model early shapes your architecture, your auth approach, and how your app will be reviewed before listing.

Resources
AGC / Isolated Cloud are only needed for specific compliance or isolation needs. Most new apps can start on standard cloud and consider AGC later if required.
